MRONJ stands for Medication-related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw, a rare but serious condition characterised by bone death in the jaw, which can spread, be very painful and can be difficult to treat.
It is primarily associated with certain medications like bisphosphonates and denosumab, used to treat conditions like osteoporosis and cancer. It can also be caused by head and neck radiotherapy for treatment of cancer.
It is important for people taking these medications or that have had radiotherapy, of the head and neck, to limit the risk of needing teeth extracted. Therefore, they need to be extra vigilant with their oral hygiene routine and limit sugar in their diet.
